Biography
Shiloh Gastello is a Ceramicist and Tea Educator. He has been a Potter since 2009, and a Ceramics Instructor since 2013. He has studied tea, Chinese Gongfu Cha tea service, and making Chinese tea wares since 2016. Shiloh has taught tea and ceramics workshops in Oregon, California, and China. He spent one month in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China, as an Artist-In-Residence at the Bagongshawan Dai Pottery, where he lived and studied with Dai Potters and Tea Producers in December, 2017. Gastello lectured at Jingdezhen University in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China in August, 2018. He was an Artist-In-Residence and Ceramics Instructor at the Taihang Mountain Range Pottery International Ceramics Festival/Conference in Changzhi City, Shanxi Province, China in August, 2019. Gastello has exhibited his tea wares Nationally, as well as Internationally in China and Japan. He earned his Master of Fine Arts In Craft Degree with an emphasis in Ceramics at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, OR in 2016, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA with an emphasis in 3D Media and Painting in 2011.
Regarding his study of tea, Shiloh stated: “Vital to deepening my understanding of tea and tea wares is holding tea sessions, and teaching virtual tea education workshops and classes that explore writing/journaling with guided somatics with tea for personal development. This social tea practice has provided a rewarding way to explore creating a space for thoughtfully engaging in meaningful dialogs across cultures, and with communities all over the world.”
